Streaming Chart of NSE Nifty
Are you interested in viewing streaming quotes of NSE Cash and F&O Symbols online ? This page discusses some of the key points that a trader should consider before selecting a good real time stock charting system. So.... lets begin.

Before looking at various options available, you must first define your requirements. Then make 3 columns 'must have', 'nice to have' and 'not required' and place your each requirement under each column. You should ask yourself following questions.

Am I an intraday or End-of-Day Trader ? What is going to be my trading frequency ?
Based on your experience and present occupation, you will need to decide how much time you can devote for trading and accordingly, define your need. For example, if you are currently employed and spend your daytime at office, you may not be able to devote time and concentration required for intraday trading. Also if you are new to stock markets, obviously you would want to start with occasional trading using end-of-day charts. Depending on your profile, you will need to decide whether you need access to realtime, delayed or end-of-day charts. Then while selecting your analysis platform, you will need to see if your requirement is met by it or not.

Which exchange / stocks am I going to trade ?
Sometimes, a few charting platforms offer excellent features but if they do not support / show data of the exchange / stocks required for your technical analysis, you may not be able to select such a charting software - howsoever good it is. For example, if you live in India and want to see Live Charts of NSE for trading, this becomes your one of the 'must have' features. So support for the required exchange is a 'must have' feature. You can also look at how easy it is to add intraday / EOD data of other symbols / exchanges in that platform - should you decide to expand your trading horizon later.

Indicators used and their customization
To make your trading decisions, normally you will take help of indicators. Some of the popular indicators include RSI, Stochastics, MA, EMA, Chaikin, ADX, MACD, ROC, SAR, TRIN, TRIX, etc.. You should see if the required indicators are supported the charting platform chosen by you. You will also need to pay attention to whether it allows easy modification of its parameters, viewing styles, etc. - to match with your choice.

Do I use any trading strategy to make my trading decisions ?
If you are going to use any mechanical trading system to generate buy / sell signals on the chart, you should first check if the chosen platform has capability to add custom trading strategy as per your requirements. As you probably know, emotion and greed and the 2 deadliest obstacles in stock trading and most professional traders use mechanical trading system for making their trading as emotionless as possible. Typically, modern technical analysis and charting platforms are equipped with their own language using which, traders can define their own trading strategies.

How many stocks I trade at a time ?
This is important in case you are trading intraday markets. Because you will need to track movements in all those stocks in which you have open positions. So your charting platform and data provider must have capabilities to send streaming data to charting platforms for multiple symbols simultaneously.

Does it facilitate loading of historical data ?
Historical data is required for determining the Resistance / Support levels. As a stock market trader, I am sure you are aware about the fact that trading has higher volumes at their established Support / Resistance levels.

Does it have Scanning facility to scan during live market ?
When you are trading a mechanical strategy, you would want to maximise the opportunities presented by such a strategy. The platform chosen by you should have abilities to Scan your symbol database to find stocks which match your entry criteria and show them at once to you - so that you can take a position in them.

Does it have Backtesting facility ?
Whenever you define a trading strategy, you must know how effective that trading strategy is - BEFORE putting it in actual practice. To do so, most modern charting platforms provide facility to apply and check the performance of your trading strategy on historical data. This process is called backtesting. Backtesting supplies you with useful information like its profit / loss table for various timeframes, drawndowns, risk to reward ratio, total no. of trades (useful for finding brokerage), % of winning / losing trades, etc.. Once you have this information, it always helps you to finetune and trade your trading strategy with confidence.

Does it allow Optimization ?
This is a very advanced feature provided by very few charting platforms. Optimization allows you to 'adjust' the values of the key-parameters of your trading system in such a way that the yield of your trading system is maximum. Advanced Techncial Analysis platforms like AmiBroker even go further and allow you to define the target matrix for which the optimization is performed alongwith facility to perform portfolio optimization.

Does it allow portfolio management ?
When you are trading multiple instruments, the charting platform must have ability to manage your portfolio. This involves adjusting your capital against selected instruments as per your criteria and recording the profit / loss in each of them. Charting platforms like AmiBroker provide you with 'Account Manager' where you can record and manage all the stocks under your portfolio.

Does it support various data formats / EOD as well as realtime data vendors ?
This always helps to reduce your dependency on any particular vendor and switch to someone else, if he is not performing as per your expectations. Always remember - accurate, authentic and timely data is the first requirement of any technical analyst. If you are trading volatile market like NSE Cash or Futures and Options, you should always select a reliable NSE intraday data vendor which is used by professional traders.

Custom Timeframes ?
Does it support all general timeframes AS WELL AS custom timeframes ? This is sometimes looked upon as a 'must have' feature by many traders. If a trading system works better in a odd timeframe (say 7 minute), your charting platform must have ability to show the charts accordingly.

Tick charts ? Range Bars ?
If you are an intraday trader and want to see tick charts or range bars, you must check if the charting platform and the data vendor chosen by you (both) support this.

Last but not the least, you would also consider non-technical features to decide your live charts vendor. This includes checking the stability and reliability of the products, reading reviews about the products on forums, support facilities offered and last but not the least pricing. I know price of any product is very important decision making factor but you should not select any platform simply because it offers FREE Nifty Live Charts. There are many websites which offer free / cheap intraday data but you should first check if it contains all features in your 'must have' column and only after you shortlist a number of platforms based on your priorities, consider one of them based on non-technical features as mentioned above.
